Shipping container architecture is booming and the fact that acquiring shipping container is rather simple is great if you want to join the trend. But things don’t stop there, it’s actually just the beginning now that solar power is also gaining terrain when it comes to construction.

A Miami office made entirely out of repurposed shipping containers and powered by solar energy is just one of the many interesting projects taking form this year, along with a sun-powered cultural center in Taichung, Taiwan that will be made out 1,620 recycled shipping containers.

The first project comes from an architecture studio based in Argentina whilst the latter comes from a New York architecture firm.

The office in Miami is currently under construction and the structure is being built out of four repurposed containers, configured in a way that will provide the building with plenty of open spaces and great ocean views. The building is not just about recycling shipping containers but it also features solar power as its main energy source, paired with a rainwater harvesting system.

This trend of high end design and sustainable systems continues to grow and one of its main sources of materials is no other than shipping containers, thanks to their versatility, durability, and cost effectiveness as well as other properties.

Other features that this Miami office will include are water heating panels, garden terraces, interior and exterior LED lighting, and energy-efficient appliances. The sophisticated building is not only sustainable but it also holds a remarkable aesthetic value that comes in the form of a stark white container structure that aids passive cooling, beautiful views of the Miami shores, plenty of natural light and relaxing outdoor garden spaces.

On the other side of the world, in Taiwan the Taichung City Cultural Center will be moving its public library and fine arts museum to a structure made out of cargo shipping containers. The eco-friendly cultural landmark will be built with 1,620 shipping containers.

These container structures are attractive mainly because of their low environmental impact and practical form which makes them versatile and contribute to the bigger picture of sustainability. These durable 100% cor-ten steel structure are perfect for architectural purposes and recycling them helps the environment.

The building in Taichung will feature vertical gardens and vegetated facades and walls that will naturally abate sunlight while purifying the air, thus improving indoor air quality.
