Encouraging Your Child to Volunteer

For many of us, December is the time of the year to celebrate the holidays and spend time with our family.  Aside from the more popular holidays during this month, there are actually many other national days that many of us don’t know about.  For instance, on December 5th, it’s International Volunteer Day.  In honor of this day, we’re going to discuss how your children can give back to the community and why it’s important.

Why It’s Important

Volunteering is a great way to teach your children the importance of giving back to the community.  By learning at a young age, they are more likely to keep it as a routine for the rest of their lives.  Aside from helping the community, volunteering looks great on a resume.  It shows potential employees that they care about the community and that they have experience handling different responsibilities.

Where to Volunteer

If you look online, you’ll find many different volunteer opportunities in the community.  What’s important is finding one that your children will enjoy doing.  For instance, if they love animals, you can check to see if they need any helping hands at the animal shelter.  If they love running, see if they can volunteer at a charity race.  This is important because many parents state that it’s hard to get their children interested in volunteering.  Aside from finding something they would like to do, you can make it a family outing or even tell them to invite a friend.
